In mid-May 2025, the Lakeland City Commission unanimously passed an ordinance to install automated school-zone speed cameras around nine local schools in response to numerous student-vehicle incidents. By June 2, 2025, this ordinance became official and is scheduled for implementation. After a 30-day public awareness period, drivers caught exceeding the speed limit by over 10 mph during active school zone hours will face $100 citations. The plan includes the installation of 14 cameras near nine schools, including Lincoln Academy, Crystal Lake, Philip O’Brien Elementary, and Lakeland High, expected by October 1, 2025, pending permit approval.
