While the City of Lakeland Transportation and Development Review is working tirelessly to find solutions to the safety problems around the city, especially at some of the most dangerous problem points, it will take time before these issues can be reduced on a larger scale.

U.S. 98 North and Griffin Road

U.S. 98 North and Griffin Road has been identified as one of the most dangerous intersections in Lakeland. Both pedestrian and vehicle accidents happen often here because cars are typically going too fast through the intersection. When the city makes it easy for drivers to fly through intersections, both vehicle passengers and pedestrians have the potential to get seriously hurt.

In order to increase driver and pedestrian safety, the city is planning to narrow the road in this area, reduce speed limits, and add visual clues for drivers to ensure they slow down when coming off the highway. They’ll also include refuge spots for pedestrians between large streets.

Memorial Boulevard and North Florida Avenue

Another dangerous intersection in Lakeland is between Memorial Boulevard and North Florida Avenue. Along Memorial Boulevard, the city plans to add HAWK signals, which are pedestrian-activated traffic control signals. These signals have been shown to significantly reduce bicycle and pedestrian accidents caused by motor vehicles.

Intersection Collision Avoidance Safety Program

A new program called the Intersection Collision Avoidance Safety Program (ICASP) is being tested out to reduce the number of pedestrians being hit in crosswalks by red-light runners. The ICASP uses the city’s intersection detection cameras to predict when someone is about to run a red light.

When the camera predicts someone is going to run a red light, it’ll hold all cars and pedestrians at their respective red light for a few seconds longer to avoid a collision, essentially allowing the car to run the light but avoiding any further damages.

This program is still in a trial stage to see if the intersection cameras can accurately predict red-light runners; however, if this program works, it could significantly reduce the risk of both vehicle and pedestrian collisions by red-light runners in the future.

Consult with a Personal Injury Attorney

There are still many advancements to be made in roadway safety, and in the meantime, pedestrians and drivers need to remain aware of their surroundings. Injuries can occur unexpectedly, and when they do, any negligent party should be held accountable for the damages. If you’ve been injured in an accident, an attorney at Lopez & Humphries, PA can handle the legalities of your case.
